BIBLICAL LAW IS THE LIFEBLOOD OF OUR NATION

By Jim Jordal

Moses made an end of speaking all these words to all Israel; He said to them, Set your heart to all the words which I testify to you this day, which you shall command your children to observe to do, [even] all the words of this law. For it is no vain thing for you; because it is your life, and through this thing you shall prolong your days in the land, where you go over the Jordan to possess it. Deuteronomy 32:45-47 WEB

If you carefully consider the news these days you can easily see the lifeblood of our nation leaking slowly away. It's not that one state is in trouble---it's all of them beset by partisan wrangling and political indecision. It's not one legislative body, but all of them that fall under the insidious control of money and power. And it's not that some people are radicalized by poverty and hopelessness, but that large voting blocs are so disenchanted with their lot in life that they will vote for practically anyone offering them some form of relief.

The Bible account above took place shortly before Moses died. In his last will and testament, so to speak, he commanded his people to carry forward in their homes and families the life-giving laws of God. By so doing they would prolong their days in the new land being given them by God and would ensure their new identity and nationhood.

So why should we pay attention to instructions for national survival written some 4000 years ago? It's easy to ignore some of these Old Testament passages if you view them as old and outmoded for modern life. But as the apostle Paul says in Romans 14:4 and I Corinthians 10:11, these historic accounts are given us for our learning in the frightening days set to transpire near the end of the age. These accounts, distant as they may seem, still form the backbone for national strength, vigor, righteousness and justice.

Many of the Founding Fathers believed our nation to be the earthly incarnation of God's kingdom. To this end they patterned our legal system after biblical principles of righteousness, justice, mercy and truth. Included among these laws is Jubilee---or the operating system that would transform the nation and ready it for the advent of God's kingdom.

It is these principles of wisdom, justice and righteousness that are currently under attack by mostly ignorant persons not realizing that it is these very laws of God that make us great and enable our long-term survival. It seems we have forgotten God in virtually every facet of national life. We now celebrate money, power, violence and the expansion of our empire to the exclusion of the Divine principles that made us great and would keep us there if we would honor and obey them.

We have the mistaken view that everyone wants freedom American style. The reality is that large portions of the globe view us not as emissaries of true freedom, but as the advance guard of corporate empire building. We offer them little but more goods coupled with less tribal and national stability. They even call us “The Great Satan” to emphasize what they view as our true morality. We have yet to learn that toppling one Middle Eastern dictator does nothing but ensure the onset of a new one who carries forward the same corruption and lack of concern for the people as the old one.

The great shaking now threatening most of the world's institutions and structures is orchestrated by God in his attempt to get our attention. However, it does not yet seem to be working. Scripture has scores of examples where God disciplines nations and leaders ignoring his commands for truth and justice. Sometimes it's governmental failure, war, national captivity, disease, famine, or natural disaster that awakens God's people. Other times it's national destruction due to their blindness and stubbornness.

God is knocking loudly at the door of American government and business organization with the message as given by Moses: The law of God is your national life and ethos---it is your very character and identity as a people. It is your life and health, and is vital to the continuance of your freedoms and existence.
