BIBLICAL EXPECTATIONS FOR POLITICAL HOPEFULS

Psalm 72 reveals several of God’s expectations for the political policies and behavior necessary to national success and longevity. Written by King Solomon of Israel, the psalm compares the future coronation of Jesus Christ on his kingdom throne of judgment and righteousness with the beginning rule of Solomon here on earth. The same principles apply whether it is Solomon or Christ reigning because they are universal principles vital to national success.

The psalm opens with this prayer by Solomon: "God, give the king your justice; Your righteousness to the royal son." Solomon knows he cannot succeed without God’s anointing of wisdom sufficient so that he will administer justice and righteousness. He also understands that his kingdom's prosperity and future health depend upon the administration of justice without fear or favoritism.

Next, Solomon applies what Christ will do in the future to what he as ruler must do now: "He will judge your people with righteousness, And your poor with justice. The mountains shall bring prosperity to the people. The hills bring the fruit of righteousness.  He will judge the poor of the people. He will save the children of the needy, And will break the oppressor in pieces." (2-4, cf. 12-15).

Solomon envisions a kingdom where the ruler judges, or makes decisions, based upon righteous principles. He speaks specifically about justice for the poor, knowing that the rich have already achieved whatever physical needs the have. He says the mountains (nations in bible terminology) and hills (smaller political entities) will bring prosperity and the fruits of righteousness to the people. Then he promises to "save the children of the needy" and to "break the oppressor in pieces."

Oppressors--then or now--do not surrender their power easily. Sometimes they need to be forced to modify; other times they must be destroyed. Look at the present situation in Syria as an example of violent widespread revolution against intransigent dictators refusing to yield power. It’s too bad that the only way to save the children of the needy is to destroy dictators, but that’s the way it often is.

The result of this application of righteousness and justice is eminently predictable: " He will come down like rain on the mown grass, As showers that water the earth. In his days, the righteous shall flourish, And abundance of peace, until the moon is no more." (6-7) Solomon likens righteous rule to the benefits of "rain on the mown grass" and "showers that water the earth," that lead to new growth, physical beauty, productivity, and plenty for all.

Contrast this idyllic vision of life with what now occurs across the earth: violence, war, suffering, starvation, family disintegration, addiction, and economic collapse. This awful state of affairs exists because we refuse to heed God’s rules for national righteousness.

This kingdom of righteousness and justice will eventually be universal, covering most of the known earth at Solomon’s time and the entire earth when Christ rules: "He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, From the River to the ends of the earth. Those who dwell in the wilderness shall bow before him. His enemies shall lick the dust. The kings of Tarshish and of the islands will bring tribute. The kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts. Yes, all kings shall fall down before him. All nations shall serve him." (8-11).

The beneficial effects of this advent of righteousness and justice will be noticed by all nations and peoples, who will bring wealth and tribute in appreciation of what they witness. Remember the many kings coming to view the splendor of Solomon’s kingdom, led by the Queen of Sheba and her report of the unimaginable wealth arising from righteous administration. This could happen now were we to drop our resistance to God’s way.

 Finally, the result of applying principles of justice and righteousness to human society will be unprecedented prosperity, universal peace, and an outpouring of love and respect from all nations. "There shall be abundance of grain throughout the land. Its fruit sways like Lebanon. Let it flourish, thriving like the grass of the field. His name endures forever. His name continues as long as the sun. Men shall be blessed by him. All nations will call him blessed.  Praise be to Yahweh God, the God of Israel, Who alone does marvelous deeds. Blessed be his glorious name forever! Let the whole earth be filled with his glory! Amen and amen. (16-19).

You can pray that somewhere along the line this truth breaks through to our national leaders before we lose whatever prosperity and peace we now have.
